For example, this winter I did shoot where there were two dogs in the household who were friends but would never touch. You’ve likely spent time enjoying this dynamic place, whether playing frisbee, soaking up rays on the lawn or studying by the fountain. The space provides such a variety of backdrops. From the wide open field with its distinctive totem poles and stately trees to the graphic concrete fountain and chairs with fun pops of colour, there’s something interesting wherever you look. Finnerty Gardens Always my go to location, Finnerty Gardens, provides a lush, ever changing backdrop. Winding pathways lead to a variety of “rooms” throughout the garden, each featuring different Pacific Northwest trees and shrubs. Sprinkled throughout are plenty of benches and fun features like ponds and a bamboo grove. If you love blossoms, this is the place to be. In the spring the garden is a riot of color with rhododendrons and magnolias. If mobility isn’t an issue, staircases nearby lead to two different beaches, one covered in large pebbles and one with coarse sand and plenty of big driftwood logs to sit on. This east Saanich park is a fun place to hang out as a family. Beach comb, skip stones and watch the otters – with any luck you’ll barely know I’m there! Over time, photographers learn how to harness light to create certain looks or moods. Knowing this, a good photographer will work with you to see what results you would like. That will help us pick the the best location and time for the shoot. Choosing a Light Golden hour (the hour before sunset) has long been revered as the gold standard in family photography. You have likely seen those photos in wheat fields with the subjects looking ethereal, their hair like stands of gold. Sounds ideal, right?Yes, the results are usually oustanding. The catch is, during the summer, golden hour takes place around 8 p.m. If you have young ones and are set on photos during this magical hour I would recommend waiting until the fall when the sun sets earlier. Another option I love is shooting on a cloudy day. This means you can even meet me at midday and walk away with beautiful photos (no harsh shadows!). That being said, it’s not impossible to schedule a photoshoot on a bright, sunny day. With bright skies, it’s all about seeking out open shade: I love to place my subject under a tree on a bright day.
